He graduated as a pharmacist and spent the next years of his career in healthcare, financing, business management, economics, and technology.

He has been in the healthcare line all his life, along with his family, so healthcare is in his blood. He worked alongside his family’s company, IHM, to learn about business management and was exposed to the healthcare industry. This is where he saw an incumbent problem that HealthMetrics is solving today that did not exist back then.

However, he held onto the idea of HealthMetrics for quite some time until he met our CTO, Advent Phang, who helped draw the blueprints of what would become HealthMetrics.

Back in 2015, sitting in his garage with an old laptop, Alvin was an army of one. That said, there are ways to make interviews feel much less stressful and just a little preparation time can go a long way.

So, let's cut to the chase - here are our tips on how you can amp up your interview game, and hopefully, ace your interview with HealthMetrics.

Know Your Audience

Do your homework and research about our company so when the question "What do you know about this company?" pops up, you'll be more than ready to answer. Take a look at our website and learn about our accomplishments, values, recent announcements and etc. If this question is not asked, you should try to demonstrate what you know about the company on your own by tying your background and achievements back to the company.

Now, don't just stop there. Take a second look at the job description of the role you applied for and be prepared to explain your fitness for the job’s roles and responsibilities. Pay attention to keywords such as required skills and focus on the responsibilities of the role. Consider how your professional goals align with the description so you can discuss relevant examples with the hiring team.

Remember though, a job interview is not an exam: you don’t need to study for hours on end. You just need to do due diligence in researching the company, try to understand what they are looking for in that particular role and ensure that you’re able to discuss what makes you a great fit for the role.

Be on Time (That Means Early)

Now that we've been working from home most of the time, we can save a ton of time from travelling. However, that doesn't mean this point is rendered invalid. There are still a lot of ways we can showcase our punctuality.

One prime example is to email all requested documents (e.g., application form, transcripts, etc.) at least one day before your interview. This allows the hiring team to go through them in advance and lets them know that you're reliable and serious about this job. Look at that, you're already making a good first impression even before the interview.

Another example is to not be on time for your interview, be at least 10 to 15 minutes early. Yes, that means virtual interviews too. In the 15 to 30 minutes before your interview, check your internet connection and sign on to the link provided by the hiring team for the interview. Do a trial round and test out your sound and video to ensure everything is in working order in time for your conversation. Technical issues are common but they are usually avoidable.

Tip: after almost a year of WFH, we know when technical issues are real and when they're excuses.

Question Us

It takes two to tango and it's the same with interviews as well. This is your chance to find out if the job and company are right for you so take full advantage of it and ask us anything (preferably about the role/company but we won't mind telling you what our favourite colour is too).

You could ask what a typical day in the life of this role looks like if you're new to the position or even ask us to describe the ideal candidate for this position if you'd like to see if what are our expectations for you. The more questions you ask, the more you will be able to know about our company; the people, structure, culture, work environment and etc. You will miss out on a lot of information by not asking enough.

Be Yourself and Be Confident

During the interview, try to relax and be authentic. Your body language says as much about you as your answers to the questions and proper preparation can help you exude confidence.

Remember, you are looking for a career (a long-term professional journey) rather than a job (a short-term goal to earn money). An interview is for both parties to evaluate and reach a common alignment and understanding of what a company can provide and what an employee can contribute to the company.

At the end of the day, what we really want to see is your authentic self. More than just hard skills, we believe strongly in working with a purpose.

We hope that you’ll be able to take away some tips from us, and with a bit of luck, we’ll see you here soon!

View the original article by Sanah Jahangir here.

Home - HealthMetrics Careers

Are you interested in joining HealthMetrics team? The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic changed the way we work forever. It forced us to evaluate the feasibility of working remotely wherever possible to allow us to continue as an effective, leading-edge, software development company. Today, almost 95% of the HealthMetrics team work from home. This is mostly a great thing. But there are some challenges. Read on.

We have all read about the benefits of remote working for the employee and here at HealthMetrics many of us have already experienced the following:

• Flexibility
• Cost saving
• Time-saving
• Work anywhere
• Peace and quiet
• Health
• Better work/life balance
• Comforts of home

But let’s take a closer look at these and give a more unbalanced view.

Flexibility

We now have the freedom to plan our days around our work and home life. We can attend medical appointments, watch the kids at sports, or even take our elderly parents shopping. As long as we meet our daily work tasks and meet targets on time, our bosses are happy. This works for some but it doesn’t always suit everyone. Now you have to be your own manager which requires a good amount of self-discipline. This is not easy for everyone.

Cost saving

Yay! No more commuting to work each day. No more travel costs, save petrol, save the planet. Savings on public transport, parking, car or bike running costs. No more traffic jams. No more office clothes to buy. Some may even save on childcare costs.
But it increases your home electricity bill and you need a better, faster, more reliable link to the outside world so your internet costs go up. And my coffee bill has gone up – Nespresso pods aren’t cheap!
If you aren’t able to work from home then your only choice may be to use a co-working space or café but this will cost you money.

Time-saving

Sure, we save time commuting but that was actually a fun part of the day – especially if you ride a bike or drive a Porsche. So you can deduct that fun factor from your day. And it’s a good way to ease into your workday and unwind at the end of it. Now it’s a shock to open the door to the spare room, one more step and you’re at work! The upside is that when your work day is done it’s only a few steps out of the ‘office’ and you’re home.

Work anywhere

This is a good one, work from anywhere. Yeah – for most of us that means finding a space in the house where you can set up your laptop and get some work done. Some of us don’t have that much spare room at home, so we end up squatting on the end of the bed. Or in the bathroom? Me? I’m planning on moving to Thailand and working from a beach chair by the ocean, drinking chilled coconut juice all day. That surely is a happy way to work. Or maybe you want to go travelling and see more of the world? If that’s the case then there’s nothing stopping you – you can travel over the weekend and be ready to go on Monday in another town or even another country.

Peace and quiet

Offices can be noisy places to work – phones ringing, people chatting and the general buzz of office life. All these distractions can drive you nuts if you really want to get some proper work done. And office politics – let’s not go there! So it’s great to work from home… unless you have young kids around. Have you ever tried to remove a soft, squishy banana from your brand new laptop keyboard & screen? It’s ugly – ask me how I know. And that washing machine screeching and vibrating next door is just so relaxing. And the neighbourhood dogs barking – that’s when I finally relented and bought my JBL Bluetooth headphones. Now it’s quiet.

Health

OK – during Covid and whatever the next pandemic brings us, it’s definitely healthier to stay home and avoid contact with other people. Before Covid, we always caught whatever virus was ‘going round the office’, but then you were allowed to take sick leave. Which wasn’t always such a bad thing. Now we just soldier on with whatever ailments we have because we can. I need to be very ill before I’ll surrender and simply stay in bed.
They say that mental health can improve with remote working as there is less stress and working in your own environment can be relaxing. Maybe for some. For others, it can be extremely stressful not having social interaction with peers and workmates. Not having that daily escape from home can be a real disadvantage and mentally damaging.

Better work/life balance

Being able to work remotely can offer a better work/life balance for some. It can make you feel in control of your life and give you more time to plan both work and home tasks. You can take a break when you need one – but you could do that in the office too. You get more family time – but did you want that?
Some people work better in the mornings than in the afternoons. And some come alive with ideas in the evenings. As long as the time you’re working doesn’t affect your colleagues and you meet deadlines then you can work when you wish. But beware of burnout from working too many hours. Learn to switch off and stop checking your messages.

Comforts of home

One of the advantages of remote working means you can set up your office or workspace as you want it. As long as you have the space and the money, you can have the ultimate office. But that isn’t always an option for some. Hopefully, there’s a space that you can call your own and then create a comfortable area to work in.

I do love it when my wife brings me a cup of coffee and some homemade banana bread though.

So, to sum up working remotely… I love it!
When I weigh up the pros and cons, the pros win hands down. It may take some time for everyone to create a comfortable workspace of their own but it will be worth it in the end. HealthMetrics is dedicated to being a remote-first company and is doing as much as possible to enable employees to make the most of the ‘new normal'. They offer all employees a ‘Remote Working Subsidy’ to help them to create a healthy home office. This is in the form of an annual allowance and can be used to buy additional office equipment (Company Lenovo laptops are already provided), pay for internet access or even co-working space.

HealthMetrics: A Better Benefits Experience For All

HealthMetrics is an award-winning cloud enterprise platform for companies to manage their employees’ healthcare benefits holistically.

HealthMetrics

Say Hello Enson

Name: Chun Kye Lau (Enson)
Job Title: Engineering Manager, HealthMetrics

Where do you live?
Seri Kembangan, Selangor
Do you have any nicknames?
Nope
What is your favourite travel destination?
Taiwan
What kind of pets do you have, if any?
Don't have any
Do you have a favourite hobby?

Culture

Justin Kerr

Name: Chun Kye Lau (Enson)
Job Title: Engineering Manager, HealthMetrics

Where do you live?
Seri Kembangan, Selangor
Do you have any nicknames?
Nope
What is your favourite travel destination?
Taiwan
What kind of pets do you have, if any?
Don't have any
Do you have a favourite hobby?
Diving
What is your life motto?
There is no "...est", only "...er", for example, there is no best stuff, only better stuff, so there will always be room for improvement.
Is it better to be perfect and late, or good and on time?
Good and on-time. It will still be available but will receive no more updates - including no more security patches. Which is a problem.
The global pandemic gave it an extended period of grace but as of December 2021, Google has pulled the pin. So where does that leave us?
Google is encouraging users to upgrade to the successor, Angular, but should we?
There are many options to this leviathan - most of which offer smaller file size, faster load times and it's easier to find new developers.

10 Fleet-footed Alternatives (in no particular order)

React
React is a declarative, efficient, and flexible JavaScript library for building user interfaces. It lets you compose complex UIs from small and isolated pieces of code called “components”. React was deployed by Facebook in 2011 and 2012. Instagram was written entirely in React. According to the JavaScript analytics service Libscore, React is currently being used on the homepages and other web pages of Netflix, Imgur, Bleacher Report, Feedly, Airbnb, SeatGeek, HelloSign, and others.

Vue
Vue is a framework and ecosystem that covers most of the common features needed in front-end development. But the web is extremely diverse - the things we build on the web may vary drastically in form and scale. With that in mind, Vue is designed to be flexible and incrementally adoptable. Depending on your use case, Vue can be used in different ways:

Enhancing static HTML without a build step

Embedding as Web Components on any page

Single-Page Application (SPA)

Fullstack / Server-Side Rendering (SSR)

Jamstack / Static Site Generation (SSG)

Targeting desktop, mobile, WebGL, and even the terminal

Aurelia
Aurelia is an open-source UI JavaScript framework designed to create single-page applications (SPAs) that doesn't behave like a framework. It's been built from the ground up using modern tooling and ECMAScript 2016 with full support for TypeScript. Its architecture is a series of collaborating libraries and WebComponents woven together with plain modern JavaScript. Aurelia is designed to help you create applications for browsers, mobile devices, or the desktop.

Backbone
BackboneJS is a light weight JavaScript library that allows to develop and structure client side applications that run in a web browser. It offers MVC framework which abstracts data into models, DOM (Document Object Model) into views and bind these two using events.

Polymer
Polymer.js is an open source JavaScript library developed by Google. It is developed to allow reusing the HTML elements for building applications with components. Polymer.js provides the simplest way to create custom HTML elements because its library is built on top of web standards API.

Polymer.js uses Google material design to develop hybrid mobile applications. So, it is fast and easy to develop mobile applications.

Polymer.js facilitates you to create your own customised and reusable elements by using polyfills web components specification.

It facilitates you to create reusable widgets.

The custom elements of Polymer.js are distributed across the network and facilitates users to use these elements with the help of HTML Imports.

Meteor
Meteor is a full-stack JavaScript platform for developing modern web and mobile applications. Meteor includes a key set of technologies for building connected-client reactive applications, a build tool, and a curated set of packages from the Node.js and general JavaScript community.

Meteor allows you to develop in one language, JavaScript, in all environments: application server, web browser, and mobile device.

Meteor uses data on the wire, meaning the server sends data, not HTML, and the client renders it.

Meteor embraces the ecosystem, bringing the best parts of the extremely active JavaScript community to you in a careful and considered way.

Meteor provides full stack reactivity, allowing your UI to seamlessly reflect the true state of the world with minimal development effort.

Sencha EXT
Sencha Ext JS is the most comprehensive JavaScript framework for building data-intensive, cross-platform web and mobile applications for any modern device. Ext JS includes 140+ UI components, such as HTML5 calendar, grids, pivot grid, D3 adapter, trees, lists, forms, menus, toolbars, panels, windows, and much more which helps make it one of the best Javascript libraries. The robust data package included in Ext JS decouples the UI components from the data layer.

Knockout
Knockout is a JavaScript library that helps you to create rich, responsive display and editor user interfaces with a clean underlying data model. Any time you have sections of UI that update dynamically, KO can help you implement and maintain it more simply.

Elegant dependency tracking - automatically updates the right parts of your UI whenever your data model changes.

Declarative bindings - a simple and obvious way to connect parts of your UI to your data model. You can construct a complex dynamic UIs easily using arbitrarily nested binding contexts.

Trivially extensible - implement custom behaviors as new declarative bindings for easy reuse in just a few lines of code.

Pure JavaScript library - works with any server or client-side technology

Can be added on top of your existing web application without requiring major architectural changes

Compact - around 13kb after gzipping

Works on any mainstream browser (IE 6+, Firefox 2+, Chrome, Safari, Edge, others)

Comprehensive suite of specifications (developed BDD-style) means its correct functioning can easily be verified on new browsers and platforms

RIOT
RIOT is another JS framework. It combines HTML, CSS and of course, JS. It allows you to create components that can be used more than once. It is a very small size/lightweight Web Component based UI library to develop web-applications. It combines the benefits of React.JS and Polymer with very concise implementation and simple constructs to learn and use.

Ember
Ember.js is a free JavaScript client-side framework used to design web apps, and it is open source.
It is a component-service framework that focuses on a layer-by-layer application development experience using precise components while maintaining a light layer on top of JavaScript.
Ember also includes a lot of backward and forward compatibilities, which makes it easier for businesses to keep up with the latest Ember versions and community-driven practices.

The verdict

The front-runners, decided by the big players out there, have to be React and Vue.

Which will it be for HealthMetrics? Stay tuned.

HealthMetrics: A Better Benefits Experience For All

HealthMetrics is an award-winning cloud enterprise platform for companies to manage their employees’ healthcare benefits holistically.

HealthMetrics

Spotlight on our CTO

Advent Phang - our co-founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

What is a Chief Technology Officer (CTO)?

In simple terms, the Chief Technology Officer is the executive responsible for managing and driving value from technology within an organisation.

Advent, what do you do at HealthMetrics?

"I strategise on the

Culture

Justin Kerr

Advent Phang - our co-founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

What is a Chief Technology Officer (CTO)?

In simple terms, the Chief Technology Officer is the executive responsible for managing and driving value from technology within an organisation.

Advent, what do you do at HealthMetrics?

"I strategise on the tech side of the company and work closely with the product, engineering, data and strategy, and IT infrastructure team. As a start-up, we did not have many resources. As a programmer with a product vision, I must balance building a ‘dream’ product with a sustainable code base, while keeping in mind that our business model may pivot at any time.
As the company grew bigger, my focus turned to growing leaders that can help with operational and tactical responsibilities, while my co-founder and I devote more time to strategic matters. A lot of these leaders are very young founding members. Many of us do not possess the kind of professional experience that you would expect to have as a prerequisite for a leadership position in a company like ours.
I, myself, did not possess this level of experience but I had the privilege to speak to a lot of experienced and smart people – people who have been there and done that. I realised that most people are very willing to share, and all you have to do is to step out there and ask."

What is your favourite memory at HealthMetrics?

"There are quite a few that come to mind. I recall quite vividly how back when we were much smaller, we had our meetings at McDonald's. We literally had trays of fries laid out in front of us. Not the healthiest, but it was a good time. Another one that I can share is the big milestone of moving into our first office at Sunway Geo. We had an open office, with all the people sitting together, working, and chatting away. It was chaotically pleasant."

What were your aspirations when you were young?

"I was raised as a kampung boy and I had never truly thought about doing anything too ambitious like changing the world. I was content with being someone who could contribute to society. As I grow older, I open myself up to more ambitious aspirations and am now a firm believer in changing the world for the better."

What about the future?

"HealthMetrics is still growing and has not reached its prime yet. There is still so much more to do and accomplish. When we started off, we kept a wish list of all the things we want to do. Most of the items are what we considered moon-shot projects back then. But today, each seems realistic and within our grasp.
The company looks forward to offering a complete, seamless service to our customer. Our plans for expanding within the region have begun - we now have a presence in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Then, who knows - watch this space"

How do you keep your team motivated?

"I open time slots for my team where they can book private or shared sessions with me. No financial records were affected, and although attackers will almost certainly have used the information in scams designed to turn data into currency, it’s unclear how successful that was.

By contrast, the much-publicised ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline affected a limited amount of personal data (the attackers reportedly gained access to the organisation’s systems after stealing an employee’s login credentials in a phishing attack), but the attackers were able to leverage that information to cause far greater damage.

The fuel supplier’s systems were crippled by ransomware, and it was forced to shut down its operational technology network and billing system.

As a result, petrol stations were left without fuel, and people hoarded supplies – often in buckets, plastic bags and other unsafe materials – as the crisis deepened.

It was arguably the most damaging cyber security incident of the year, with Colonial Pipeline eventually paying the attackers $4.4 million (about £3.3 million at the time) to regain access to its systems.

Which sectors are most targetted?

For the third consecutive year, the healthcare and health sciences sector suffered the greatest number of data breaches. Almost 300 million breached records.

This is concerning not just because of the sheer number of records affected but also the types of data involved. For example, depending on the nature of the incident, healthcare breaches can reveal medical issues that can affect victims’ reputations.

Likewise, healthcare data can be used to conduct fraud, launch phishing attacks and, in some cases, reveal financial data.

image courtesy of Luke Irwin (itgovernance.co.uk)

HealthMetrics has built the most secure data vault that you can build. We use it to help reach certain IT security goals. Thanks to ISO 27001, we have identified these security gaps and have worked to enforce users to adhere to certain methods.

For instance, one of the steps we have taken to enhance our security is Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Microsoft Authenticator. This method uses a secondary piece of information, often a code generated by an application or sent via SMS. This secondary piece of information helps to prove it really is you trying to log in, as the codes are often accessed on the phone in your pocket. Even if you do have a password that’s easy to guess, an attacker is unlikely to get access to an account with MFA turned on. These are the steps taken in enhancing our security.

There are various ways an attack can take place and at different levels. The most vulnerable would be end-user devices. Cybercriminals prefer to target endpoints because they are doorways to corporate data and, by nature, are vulnerable to attack. They are outside network security and dependent on users putting security measures into place leaving room for human error. To overcome this, we have Information Security Management System (ISMS) training for new joiners. This training better explains the important aspects that should be practiced to safeguard the device and the data in it.

Additionally, we have introduced Microsoft Endpoint Manager (MEM) in HealthMetrics. Endpoints are physical devices that connect to and exchange information with a computer network. Some examples of endpoints are mobile devices, desktop computers, virtual machines, embedded devices, and servers. Endpoint security, or endpoint protection, helps protect endpoints from malicious threats and exploits.

I would say that ISO 27001 is here to provide us with a guide and a clearer view of any missing gaps within our control which we can fix or secure to avoid being prey to hackers.
Alongside ISO 27001, every individual in HealthMetrics will have to play their role in contributing to this."

Thanks Previn!

Career Spotlight with Previn Pragash - HealthMetrics Careers

HealthMetrics encourages career development and provides necessary tools and resources for employees to complete their tasks efficiently.

HealthMetrics Careers

HealthMetrics | Optimising Healthcare Costs for All

HealthMetrics is an award-winning cloud enterprise platform for companies to manage their employees’ healthcare benefits holistically.

HealthMetrics

Project Rewrite - Overview

Reimagine and rewrite the current monolithic system into a set of microservices

Tech

Justin Kerr

Introduction

HealthMetrics current monolithic system suffers from high-coupling and an outdated technology stack.
